50 years into the Space Era, Russia’s Novosibirsk Metro found its way of commemorating the event

The Novosibirsk Metro was opened on January 7, 1986

It became the eleventh metro in the USSR

It redecorated the Gagarinskaya station named after the first Soviet cosmonaut

The stairs were equipped with spaceship-like handrails…

….and the lights covering the walls and the ceiling imitate the starry sky

Designer Igor Elchenko transformed it into a kind of a spaceship

Spacecraft windows with Gagarin’s portrait inside appeared on the walls

Initially the walls were covered with granite and marble with steel fragments

Distance from Gagarinskaya station to the next one, Zaeltsovskaya, is the shortest in the system

It took seven and a half years to complete work on the five-station launch-stage system

Now there are two lines with 13 stations there
