In 2003 the giant sculpture was disassembled into 40 fragments for reconstruction

Vera Mukhina created “Worker and Kolkhoz Woman” in 1937 for the Paris World Exhibition

Special bolts were made to put together the parts

60-meter scaffolding was built

Worn-off parts were removed

A special crane manufactured in Finland was also installed

The height of the sculpture is 24.5 meters

The Worker is 17.25 meters high; the Kolkhoz Woman is 10 meters high

The sculpture is made of stainless chromium-nickel steel

The total weight is 80 tons

The disassembled parts were welded carefully

The surface was leveled

It is not the first time the sculpture has been reconstructed

It was already repaired in 1979

And in perestroika times there were plans to move it from the North of Moscow to the center

Mukhina wanted the sculpture to be put on a 60-meter pedestal

But the Soviet authorities judged that 10 meters was high enough

The pedestal it was put on in 2009 after reconstruction is 30 meters high

In 1948 the sculpture became the official symbol of the Mosfilm cinema studio

In 1951 Mukhina made a small plaster replica for Mosfilm that is now on its property
